Wisdom teeth normally erupt between ages 17 to 25 years. Most adults have 4 wisdom teeth — one on each side — but some have fewer. Sometimes wisdom teeth are impacted (stuck and unable to grow normally into the mouth) and may cause recurrent infections of the gum (pericoronitis) and will need extraction. Early assessment and timely treatment are recommended to avoid more complex problems.
